While a great New Year blog post is great, we wanted to imagine we were sitting across the table from you and share some first-hand experiences learned in 2018.
As you look toward the year ahead, think about the previous year. Are you soaring and feeling good, or feeling frustrated and depleted of energy? If you are wrapping up the year feeling drained, you probably said yes to way more things than you should have. And you may have worked on things that weren’t in your sweet spot.
Take a realistic look at what you have planned for the next year and don’t try to take on as much. As leaders, our tendency is to always take on more, but if we are starting off a new year already maxed out, that leaves no room for fresh ideas and new pursuits. I know I’m preaching to the choir on this, but know when to say no. Don’t overcommit if that’s been your experience this past year.
Reviewing the year is essential before setting goals for your next year. It’s especially important for me personally to make my goals all-encompassing, rather than focusing just on my business. We often have a penchant towards heavily identifying with the role we play within the company, which can be to the detriment of other aspects in our lives.
Personally, I implemented a goal in 2018 that I will absolutely continue in 2019 and beyond. Each week, I established my five priorities. For 2019, I’ve tweaked it a bit from what I’ve learned last year. My top five priorities this year are to grow the company, grow influence, grow myself, grow others, and grow my team. So, based on those priorities, I’m able to look at the things I need to accomplish, which translates to a day a week.
It’s easy as a leader to feel like no matter what we’ve accomplished, it’s never enough. Unless you take the time to look back and reflect on what you actually accomplished, it’s easy for feelings of dissatisfaction to take over. By having my top five priorities, I know what I’m focused on each day. Moving the dial forward to accomplish that effort leaves me much more satisfied, instead of thinking about those things I could have done.
I encourage you to take time and reflect back on the year and your accomplishments before you start embracing goals for 2019.
Thank you for being a part of our 2018. We look forward to serving you in 2019. Happy New Year, Your Friends at Stori
